It’s not his birth, he doesn’t belong here. He’ll say the wrong thing and upset her.
But he is her husband, her partner, the love of her life.
He holds her when she’s upset in the middle of the night, and comforts her when she loses faith in herself.
That is exactly what she needs, he knows just what to say.

It’s not his birth, he doesn’t belong here. This is no place for a man.
But she holds on to his broad shoulders,
His strong arms keep her upright,
His big hands massage so firmly and his legs do not tire.
She needs his strength, his place is here.

It’s not his birth, he doesn’t belong here.
Birth is long and hard and he can’t handle seeing her in pain.
But he couldn’t leave her to deal with it all alone,
His affection, soft words, kisses and touch make the love flow.
Her waves are stronger, more efficient. Her birth is faster and easier.
His love will make the pain bearable.

It’s not his birth, he doesn’t belong here.
But this is his baby too. Part her, part him, all love.
Would you take away his chance to witness this life enter the world?
To witness her power, her strength.
They will be a team, it is their birth and he belongs here.

Rebecca is a strong believer in a woman’s ability to birth her baby. She and her husband welcomed their daughter into the world at her parent’s house in 2015. You can read her birth story “Born Into Light and Love”. Rebecca is a presenter for Beer+Bubs: Childbirth Education for Dads in the Pub and runs classes specifically on teaching dads how they can help their partners through labour. Dads haven’t always been allowed in the birth space but many women now cherish the support of their partners as they make the ultimate transition into motherhood.
